When approaching an escalator, you will likely hear the escalator motor sounds and feel the rough surface of the escalator platform. On the platform, stop your feet and with your free hand, locate the handrail. If it feels like the handrail is moving towards you, this escalator is going in the wrong direction and you should not board it. In this case, turn around, exit the platform and ask Glide to find a different escalator. If the handrail is moving away from you, this escalator is going in the correct direction and it is safe to board.

Timing is not important. When you are ready, put Glide into ready position and walk forward onto the escalator. Adjust your feet so that both are on the same step and rest Glide in standby position on the step ahead of you. Then ride up or down, keeping your hand on Glide’s grip. If you are going down, you will know you are approaching the landing at the bottom when Glide rises up to meet you. If you are going up, you will know you are approaching the landing at the top when Glide’s handle sinks down to meet you. In either direction, the handrail will also level out. This is your cue to tip Glide into ready position and walk forward to exit the escalator.
