Module 1: Positioning Glide
Section 13 of 41
Standby
With Glide positioned vertically and resting on the kickstand, this is standby position. Put Glide in standby position anytime you need both hands free, when you are not using Glide, and when it is charging. When Glide powered on, it defaulted to outdoor mode and right-hand use. While in standby position, press and hold the right turn button to enter indoor mode, Glide will respond “indoor navigation.”
Height adjustment
While in standby position, adjust Glide’s stem length for your height. Open the lower latch on the stem and pull up on the handle to full extension. Close the lower latch and open the upper latch. Raise the handle until the top of the grip is level with your waistline.
Hand selection
Consider which hand you will predominantly use to grip Glide. If you have been a guide dog user, try using Glide with your opposite hand as the muscle memory from guide dog work may interfere with learning to use Glide properly. Long-time cane users may be most successful using Glide in their opposite, non-cane hand. You can switch which hand you hold Glide with short-term or long-term at any time. Check that Glide is set for your preferred hand; In ready position, press and hold the right button to toggle between left and right hand settings.
Alignment
It is important that you and Glide are in proper alignment with each other in order for the cameras to have the best view of your travel path. To align Glide with your body, grip the handle palm-down with either hand. Gently slide your same-side foot between Glide’s wheels so your leg is directly behind its stem. Now your face, shoulders, hips, feet, and the knuckles of your grip hand should all be facing forward. Glide’s cameras and kickstand are now facing forward too. When asked to “check your alignment” return to this position.
Ready position
When ready to walk, slide your grip-side foot backward away from Glide’s wheels. With your hand on the grip, palm-side down, pull the handle towards your body until your wrist is resting on the front of your hip. If your hand is behind your body, Glide’s cameras will detect you as an obstacle. Make adjustments to the stem height as needed. Your arm should be relaxed, elbow hanging close to your ribs. Glide’s stem should be at a 35-degree angle, with the kickstand parallel to the ground. This is the ready position; Glide is now off the kickstand, the wheels can roll, and the cameras have the best view of the path ahead.
